Are we having fun yet?

If you are involved with the operations of an event, any event, then you are having fun. It doesn’t matter that you are working 14-16hrs a day prior to the event setting it up, it doesn’t matter you miss lunch more times than not or have dinner around 9 or 10pm because this is fun.

It changes day by day and potentially minute by minute. Someone didn’t measure correctly so the tent is resting against a tree; the bus loop is failing because the rock base didn’t hold; the keys to the forklift are misplaced and it is blocking a road for a delivery; a truck showed up with no contact information.

It doesn’t get any better than this because you have the opportunity to solve all these challenges and when you do, it’s fun. During an event these challenges can be rapid fire happening one after the other so fast it’s hard to keep up, but this is what operations is all about. Define the problem, hopefully before it happens and solve it. You have the answers and even if you don’t, the answers are readily available.

I’ve been doing this for over 35 years and it is still fun. I must admit there are times when the fun is buried in what is happening at the time, but when we are back on track the fun returns. If you are in operations of an event then you understand what I am saying.

I can’t imagine another job which allows this much enjoyment.
